Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart

Ms. DiGiaimo took members of her Gospel Choir and Praise Dancers to visit these sacred grounds in our Archdiocese.

The Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark is one of the most "spectacular cathedrals in the country - even larger than the infamous St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City".  The beautiful stained glass windows were crafted in Munich, Germany and are considered to among the most magnificent in the world.

The Cathedral's Organ has an amazing 9,513 pipes and is the largest in New Jersey.

The 34 foot rose window over the main entrance is the second largest in the western hemisphere.

During this Year of Faith, we turn to Mary, Mother of Jesus.  Dedicated to Our Lady of Grace, is a chapel built behind the main altar containing a crypt with four former bishops.

Our beloved Pope John Paul II had visited the Cathedral on October 4, 1995 and designated the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart as a Minor Basilica.  According to Church History, "a basilica is designated by the Pope to buildings that carry special spiritual, historical, and architectural significance".
